foot care at home

Toenails cut straight, cuticles cared for, colour that shrugs off shoes: pedicure season without the fuss. Which base belongs on feet, and how it all comes off again without a fight.

Feet do the hardest work in the least glamorous conditions, and then summer arrives and suddenly everyone can see them. The good news: presentable feet are a routine, not a project. This is the honest at-home version, from the care basics to gel polish that survives sandals, shoes and the beach, and how it comes off again.

the care basics, minus the mythology

Toenails want two things: to be cut more or less straight across, corners left alone, which is how ingrown edges are avoided, and to be filed smooth so nothing catches in socks. The skin around them wants the same routine as your hands: the cuticle remover and pusher work on toes exactly as they do on fingers, before every pedicure, and a drop of cuticle oil in the evening keeps the whole neighbourhood soft. That’s the entire foundation. Everything else is polish.

the routine, the base, the colour, the exit

gel polish on toes: the base decides

One rule matters more than all the others: toenails take the soak-off base coat. It’s the base built for feet, maximum hold, 14+ days of wear, and it stands up to the friction of shoes and socks in a way the peel-off base was never meant to, that one is for hands only. From there the routine is the routine: prep, base, two thin coats of colour, top coat, every layer cured, every free edge sealed. Toe edges take knocks all day, the seal is what shrugs them off.

colour logic for feet

Feet can carry more colour than hands, they’re further from your face and closer to your confidence. Deep reds and rich shades look intentional on toenails year round, and matching hands to feet is a classic that never needed defending. The minimalist route works too: a nude or sheer milky shade makes feet look simply well kept, which on feet is its own flex. Whatever the shade, gloss finishes the job, toes in high shine read cared-for from across the pool.

removal: the ten minute exit

Toes wear the soak-off base, so removal is the soak-off method: file the shine and the colour off, down to your natural nail colour with the base left on, a wipe soaked in remover, about ten minutes, and the gel polish pushes off gently. Any residue, a light buff with the 180 side of the buffer and dust off. Never pick, never force, toenails forgive even less scraping than fingernails. The removal page walks through every step, and a drop of cuticle oil afterwards gives the skin back what removal took.

frequently asked questions

Which base do I use on toenails?

No, hands only. Toenails live inside shoes, and that constant friction asks for maximum hold: the soak-off base coat is the base for feet, 14+ days of wear, built for exactly those conditions.

How long does gel polish last on toenails?

14+ days on the soak-off base, and often gracefully longer, because toenails grow slower than fingernails and regrowth shows later. Thin layers and a sealed free edge remain the conditions.

How often should I do my feet?

Care is rhythm, not rescue: cuticle work before every pedicure, oil in the evenings you remember, and a fresh manicure when the old one tells you. Feet ask for less frequency than hands, but they notice neglect just as loudly.
